Maremma Retreat
(sleeps 14 - 18 people, park, pool, incredible view, A/C)
Villa Location
The estate comprises about 100 hectares of spectacular hillside, with forest, hiking and biking paths and gorgeous views. The farmhouse is surrounded by a landscaped garden and the pool sits behind it with a vast view. The owners' villa is on the left side closer to the entrance to the estate. A dirt road lined with ancient olive trees leads to the Maremma Retreat. From the main paved road to the villa it's about an 8 minute drive downhill, as you gradually immerse yourself in the beautiful nature.
Local Area
The village is about 2.5 miles away. You could hike there, keeping in mind that on the paved road to the village there is no side walk (though there is very little traffic). The village and others nearby are medieval strongholds, with a characteristic atmosphere and hidden treasures. Look around for ancient walls, impressive churches and cloisters in Sassetta, Suvereto and Castagneto Carducci, a town named after the Italian poet Giosue' Carducci. In Bolgheri you can admire the beautiful red castle and in Campiglia Marittima the beautiful entrance to the 12th century church of S. Giovanni.
Owner Recommended Restaurant
Castagno, a local restaurant with organic produce and fresh ingredients; reasonably priced, about 3miles from Maremma Retreat. In S. Vincenzo Il Gambero Rosso. For an excellent fish meal the owner can recommend places in Cecina. To be truly spoiled, reserve a dinner at Maremma Retreat!

A trip to one or all of the Tuscan islands is a real treat: you can visit Elba, Pianosa, Capraia with the national park of the Arcipelago Toscano, or the island of Montecristo. The owners of Maremma Retreat can also organize a sailing excursion for you.

Relax on one of the long beaches or little bays of the Maremma region, with the typical maritime pine forests. Follonica is a popular shore destination (about 23 miles); here you can visit the iron museum and the Modigliani art museum.

Massa Marittima (about 24 miles) is a fascinating town, divided into Citta' Vecchia (old city) with an intense medieval feel and great palazzi of artistic value, and Citta' Nuova (new city) which, despite the name, dates its origins to 1228. The historical downtown is pedestrian and very pleasant to visit. The Duomo is a typical, beautiful example of Pisan roman-gothic architecture.

Livorno was founded by Francesco I de' Medici in 1577 and in the late Renaissance it acquired the nickname of the "ideal city". As an important port, the city was always very diverse and tolerant. The Italian National Naval Academy was founded here in 1881. In the center you can admire the Duomo, several palazzi, the castles, Fortezza Vecchia and Nuova, and the monument of the four Moors. The Jewish Museum testifies to the history of Livorno's important Jewish community. For excellent seafood, there is no better place than Livorno! (about 42 miles).
