 Roman Holidays

If you are contemplating going to Rome for a few days or a week, we can highly recommend this Trastevere apartment as a wonderful place to stay. We stayed here during our 3 day stay in Rome this past autumn and our experience was wonderful.

The taxi that we took to bring us to our Roman home dropped us off a very short distance away as the streets in the immediate neighborhood are lovely, quaint cobblestoned streets that are too narrow for cars. We walked to the apartment and were greeted by the owners, Claudio and Stefania. They were warm and welcoming and gave us a tour of the apartment showing us how everything worked, pointing us to some very good and nearby restaurants and leaving us a map so that we knew how and where to set out each morning on our tours of Rome.

The apartment is lovely and immaculate and the owners left it well stocked with food and paper products. It is a place where we could have spent time enjoying and feeling at ‘home in Rome’ but, of course, being in Rome, we certainly did not want to stay indoors, as inviting as the apartment was, and took to the streets to see the sights.

Rome is a very walkable city and we are a couple who enjoys walking. There are sights that are nearby and there are sights that are further away. We walked to all of the places we visited enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of wonderful food along our way. We shall limit our journal on this site to some of the places that are nearby to the apartment. There are just so many things to see in Rome that we could not possibly list them all.

We think that the major sight within Trastevere (and basically in the apartment’s backyard) is Santa Maria in Trastevere, a beautiful church and one of the oldest in Rome. It has lovely mosaics throughout and the shimmering gold color can take your breath away.

There are many cafes in the piazza where the church is located so that you can sit and enjoy the view while sipping a cup of cappucino. Also in Trastevere, there are other churches such as Santa Cecilia in Trastevere. There is also a Bernini sculpture at San Francesco a Ripa in Trastevere.

One of the things we enjoyed doing most mornings as we set out for our walking tours of this wonderful city was to cross the nearby Ponte Fabricio, which is the oldest bridge in Rome, onto the Isola Tiberina.

Each time we crossed this picturesque bridge, we saw a man who was standing there playing his flute. In the middle of the bridge was his dog who was just lying there listening to his master’s music. And on the bridge’s railing, directly next to the musician, was a sea gull that would stand there and cock his head as he listened to the music.

Another nearby sight, although not in Trastevere itself, is the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, one of the oldest churches in Rome. In the portico outside of this church is the Bocca della Verita (Mouth of Truth) which was made popular by the Gregory Peck/Audrey Hepburn movie “Roman Holiday” where its legend was explained – that if you tell a lie while your hand is in the mouth, the teeth will close down tightly and you run the risk of losing your hand!

There are numerous eating establishments near the apartment that Claudio and Stefania pointed us to – some small, inexpensive and delicious; others more expensive and also delicious. The two that jump to mind immediately are Le Mani in Pasta and Spirito DeVino. The apartment owners are happy to recommend others as well.

One of the many nice things about staying in such a homey, comfortable apartment, however, is that there is no need to go out in the evening for dinner. There is a small store less than ½ block away from the apartment where you can get some delicious Italian bread, tasty meats, divine cheeses and juicy grapes which you can enjoy with a wonderful bottle of Italian wine. And, of course, there are some wonderful Italian pastries for dessert. There is even an espresso machine in the apartment. This is such a relaxing way to spend an evening in your delightful Roman home after a busy day.

We had such a comfortable and relaxing time while in ‘our’ apartment. We hope that our words will help you decide that you would like to stay at this home in Rome as well. It is lovely and just what is needed after a hectic and exhausting day of touring what we consider the most wonderful city in the world!
