Map It Out

Via Michelinhttp://www.viamichelin.co.uk/viamichelin/gbr/tpl/hme/MaHomePage.htm
We find this website to be the best for itineraries. The “Michelin route” is generally the best one to follow. You can view fairly precise traveling time and kilometers count.

Tutto Citta'http://mappe.alice.it/tcolnew/index_alice_lite.html
This is an Italian website, intuitive to use. It is ideal to create maps and locate restaurants, pharmacies, cinemas, etc in the area.

Parking Meters: Parking meters are slightly different in different areas of Italy. The most common model is a pay-station where you insert coins for the amount of time desired and you get a printed receipt that you leave inside your car - just behind the windshield. Usually there is one pay-station per block. In major cities you can also buy a pre-paid card in a “Tabaccheria”. You then insert the card in the pay-station, select the desired time and get your receipt. The cards are not cheaper just more convenient not to carry around coins.

Driving Rules: Italian driving rules are almost identical to US driving rules. One important exception is that you are never allowed to make a right turn at a red light. On highways stay in the right lane, unless you are going considerably faster than vehicles in that lane. The left lane is mainly to pass other vehicles, so try not to cruise there. On highways you must have your headlights on at all times.

Trains

Trenitaliahttp://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html
On this website you can view train schedules for all trains, traveling times, stations throughout Italy.

Euro Star Trainshttp://www.raileurope.com/us
On this website you can purchase tickets in advance for Eurostar trains in Italy. It is a good idea to do so in high season, between July and end of August.

Validating Tickets: Tickets for buses and trains must be purchased before boarding, otherwise you will be fined. Once you have the ticket, you have to validate it. On buses you will see a yellow, gray or orange machine, towards the back of the bus. For rail tickets the machines are on the station platforms.

Flights in Europe

Europe has several low-fare airlines that can be quite convenient to move around fast on a budget. Be aware that there is very basic service on these flights and do not use major airports. There are sometimes delays, so plan accordingly to avoid tight transfers. As of today, there is no airline that flies within Italy only. You can check out the following sites:
